Three years later and here we are. Deliverables have been delivered.
“The Favorite”, for all its oddball characteristics, has been, well, a ~favorite~ of mine for a while. I remember writing the verses on brown paper bags when I worked at the local grocery store, confused and frustrated by all the many strange social paradigms and contradictions of today. How narrow and performative acceptable behavior had become, and how shallow and manipulative too many of my interactions post graduation had been. I was also frustrated at myself. Despite being given the world, I felt like I was always missing. Now and again, I still do.
What I love about the song is the way it spits back every infuriation with the sunniest of phrases: “Don’t you worry about it.” I claim it as my Lily Allen moment (who, if you didn’t know, 100% raised me in middle school. “The Fear” and “F*ck You” are masterpieces for generations.) Commentary that is pointed and humorous interests me quite a bit these days. I take that as a sign of personal growth.
I don’t have too many expectations with this release, but I do hope that it makes you smile. If you’ve never been a favorite, like myself, this song is most certainly for you.
